How to Stay Booked Even in the Slow Season - 2

By Hitman | February 5, 2010

Here’s what I do…

I’ve been doing this for years to stay busy in what are usually the slowest months for most cleaners in my city…

It doesn’t have anything to do with the internet, although you could use the internet to leverage it.

It doesn’t cost much money.

In fact, once we do it, it’s money in the bank.

First, my current clients are my #1 priority and gold mine in my business. They’re the people who love my company. They’re the people who keep us in business. We exist solely for them.

So any time business is slow, my first course of action is to send an offer to my current clients. I don’t mean a simple email, but a hardcopy, snail mail letter or postcard. And like magic, the phone starts to ring. Try it! It works!

Now this is assuming you delivered to them a pretty good cleaning job. If you did, they’ll call you back time and again. But you MUST ask them for business when you need it. Otherwise, how will they know you’re in need?

What kind of offers should you use?

Our regular clients get our best offers.  And when I saw offer, I don’t mean XX% or $XX off.  In fact, we typically don’t give these types of offers.  Instead, we give them FREE premiums like FREE car mat cleaning, their favorite recliner cleaned FREE, etc.  This way, we’re giving them something of value, but not cutting our bottom line.

Second, we rely on our neighbors.  They love us too, but not quite as much as our clients. We precondition them this way by periodically mailing letters, postcards, and flyers with special “Neighbors Only” offers. We offer all our neighbors free spot remover with no obligation to ever buy anything.

Now understand this please…our current clients get the special offers FIRST and more frequently. And many times marketing to our current clients with special “Winter Offers” is enough to keep us busy through the winter. I highly recommend you start mailing to your current clients. If extra budget allows and you have a need for more business, then begin a mail campaign to your “Neighbors.”

Your clients are the real asset in your company. Treat them right and communicate with them regularly. You’ll stay busy enough even in the slow times unless you’ve got 3 feet of snow on the ground all winter. And if this is the case, you may consider moving.

Get a KILLER “Times are Tough” Winter letter in the Ad of the Month Coaching Club.  This letter has produced 21-to-1 returns and has by far been the best mail-out used by many members.  You get access to this letter and tons more as soon as you sign up.  Get in on the action at www.Hitmanadvertising.com/coaching

Carpet Cleaning Advertising Predictions For 2010 - 0

By Hitman | December 19, 2009

Let’s imagine for a moment what 2010 will bring. Hopefully you’ve set aside some time in the next couple weeks to create an advertising plan for the coming year. To create the plan, you surely need to consider trends in media.

Let’s take an educated guess at what may be your best advertising bets.

The Internet, especially Google, will continue to have more homeowners searching for cleaning companies. In some cities, several thousand people every month look to find a carpet cleaner on Google. The number of Google searches far exceeds any other online search (including yellowpages.com) and rivals the yellow pages.  In fact, next year Google is planning on changing the game of search a bit when they “refine” their search engine.  This means you need to be on top of your SEO if you want to end the year with a good Google ranking.

Online social media will continue to bring more clients to those who use it properly. The social media phenomenon will take off. Cleaning companies who make themselves available online will reap the benefits of new clients at little cost. Some examples include Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Merchantcircle, Hot Frog, Ning, and others.

Direct mail, aka snail mail, will be an overlooked opportunity. Due to the rising costs of postage and printing, many business owners will cut spending in direct mail. This will leave a HUGE opportunity for you. Mailing postcards, newsletters, and salesletters to your clients will be the most important thing you can do this year.

Email newsletters will begin to get lost in the shuffle. Email newsletters will be super cheap to send. But more and more business owners will catch on to using them, therefore making your email easy to get overlooked. Because of the low cost it will be a great idea to use email newsletters, but by don’t depend on them as a main source of communication to your beloved clients.

Yellow page directories will continue to lose market share. Most cleaning company owners are shifting a portion of their former yellow page budget to the Internet. A portion of your ad dollars may be better spent on search engine optimization or building a better website. Sure, yellow pages will still work for some companies, but the return on investment has decreased for most companies across the U.S. If you use yellow pages, you’ll need a very creative ad that sells.

Newspaper will remain steady. This media has declined over the past few years, but it still has potential to be a great advertising opportunity for cleaners. In some communities, it may work better than others. Many homeowners over age 50 will continue to use newspaper as their primary news source.

Outdoor billboard advertising will be another overlooked opportunity. However, billboards only work in certain conditions. Rug cleaning companies with a physical location for rug drop-offs may benefit greatly from billboards. In addition, companies with large advertising budgets who can afford several billboards, along with an additional advertising media like radio or newspaper, can win big.

Here’s how you should make your plan:

  1. Write all the benefits you want to communicate
  2. Write all the features you want to communicate
  3. Narrow your ideas down to the biggest benefit
  4. Then choose the best media to communicate the big benefit to your prospect

Consider your advertising media carefully before creating an ad plan or choosing a specific media. Take the time now to avoid wasting money on advertising next year.
